How to Find the Perfect Sales Keynote Speaker (Even If I’m Already Booked!)

I’m thrilled that you’re considering me for your next big event—thank you! However, as much as I’d love to work with every single one of you, sometimes the calendar won’t allow it and – I hate to admit it – sometimes I won’t be the best speaker for your particular event. But don’t worry! Whether you end up working with me or another fantastic speaker, I want to help you make the best choice possible. That’s why I’ve written this handy guide to finding the perfect sales keynote speaker for your event.

If you’re planning a sales kickoff, conference, or a major event in 2025, this post is for you. I’ll walk you through what to look for in, why it matters, and how to make sure you get someone who’ll leave your audience inspired, motivated, and ready to crush their sales goals.

Why Is Choosing the Right Speaker So Important?

Picking the right choice means finding someone who not only knows their stuff but also fits perfectly with your event’s vibe and goals – is your event young and fun, or is it senior and serious for example? A great keynote speaker does more than just fill a time slot; they’ll work with you to set the tone for your entire event. They can pump up your team, inspire your business leaders, and engage and entertain in the right style.

When you get it right, the audience walks away energised, armed with actionable insights, and maybe even a new perspective on their work. When you get it wrong… well, people might remember your event, but not in the way you hoped!

What Makes a Great Sales Keynote Speaker?

Well, first and foremost, you want someone who knows their stuff. And by “stuff,” I mean sales, obviously, but also how to engage and inspire an audience without resorting to tired old clichés.

Your speaker should have the experience to back up their words. Look for someone who’s been around the block a few times, without being old-fashioned. Sales people want someone they can believe, but who they can also relate to. A good rule of thumb is ‘would my team enjoy chatting to this person after they’ve walked off stage? Does it feel like they’re engaging, interesting, and likeable? They need credibility – have they been in strong sales roles themselves? Written a best-selling book? Have they worked with a variety of organisations, but particularly have they worked with organisations in your industry, and of your size?

Really important – are they adaptable? Can they work with the energy of different-sized audiences, and levels of experience?  And perhaps most importantly – can they connect with your audience, tell compelling stories, and provide insights that your team can actually use—no fluff, no nonsense.

Oh, and a little humour doesn’t hurt either.

How to Identify the Best Choice

You’ve got a lot of options out there. How do you narrow it down? In my experience, personal recommendations are almost always the strongest. Have you or your colleagues or friends seen a speaker recently they really liked? If they liked them, chances are that your audience will too. Does your potential speaker have good client testimonials? Not the generic ‘I was in the audience, and they were really good’ type but actual bookers – just like you – who say things like ‘This speaker listened to the brief and delivered exactly what we wanted’. In other words, it’s clear that the speaker can deliver a genuinely valuable contribution to your event. Do they have a showreel, and do you get a good sense of what they’re like in front of an audience? As above, have they worked with companies like yours before? Have they tackled the kinds of challenges your team is facing?

You’ll also want to look at their credentials. What’s their history in sales? Are they a bestselling author? A recognised strategist? Have they won any awards or recognition? These are all good signs that they know what they’re talking about and that they can deliver a keynote that’s worth your time—and money.

Finally – and something I love offering to all potential clients – ask to have a no-obligation ‘pre-booking call’ to discuss your event and trust your instinct – is the speaker able to ‘sell themselves’ to you (and if they can’t, then worry!). Do they listen to your real needs and offer you ideas to help your event? Do you feel like they’re likeable, enthusiastic and a ‘safe pair of hands’ for your audience?

Questions to Ask

Putting on an event is stressful enough, so you need to be really confident in your speaker. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you ask some important questions.

• What’s their experience with events like yours? It’s one thing to be a great speaker; it’s another to be great at yourevent.

• How do they tailor their content? ‘Off-the-shelf’ might not be right for your event. You want someone who can tweak their message to fit your audience like a glove.

• Are they available?! This one’s pretty obvious, but it’s important. You don’t want to fall in love with a speaker only to find out they’re already booked solid during your event dates.

• What do they need from you? Some speakers are pretty low-maintenance, but others might have specific requirements for AV equipment, staging, or other logistics. Better to know upfront!

Are Sales Speakers and Motivational Speakers The Same Thing And Which One Is Right For My Event?

The are strengths and weaknesses to both ‘motivational’ speakers and ‘sales’ speakers, and in my view you should look for the best of both worlds. At their best, motivational speakers will leave you feeling like you can take on the world. At their worst, they tell you some nice stories and life lessons but not anything you can actually ‘use’.A speaker focused on sales at their best will give you loads that you can use – strategies, insights, trends and techniques. At their worst, they just give you lots of information, leaving you feeling like ‘I’ll get round to that one day’.

So, of course, your perfect speaker combines both – bringing insight with energy,  getting your team to believe they can take on the world in the long-run, but also knowing how to hit their targets in the next quarter!

How to Choose a Sales Kickoff Speaker Who’ll Set the Stage for Success

Your sales kickoff is the event that sets the tone for the entire year, so no pressure, but you really need to get this right. They should be someone who can not only motivate your team but also provide them with real-world strategies they can use throughout the year. It’s about getting everyone on the same page, enthused and inspired.

Look for someone who’s a mix of a motivational speaker and a sales expert. They should be able to speak to the specific challenges your team faces and leave them with concrete ideas they can implement right away. In a perfect world, they’ll be entertaining and engaging, and able to lift the energy—especially if it’s going to be a long event.

The Importance of Tailoring Content to Your Audience (No ‘Cookie-Cutter Keynotes’)

It’s important to tailor content – but not too much! That’s why it’s crucial to find a speaker who can tailor their content to your specific needs and event style but also play to their own strengths. A good speaker will have a strong sense of what will work for your event, and will know how how to add what I call ‘bespoke touchs’ without writing a script completely from scratch (you don’t want to book someone who’s doing a completely new speech – you’re then paying them to rehearse!)

Mixing what the speaker knows works for an audience, with some industry- or team-specific bespoking makes for a keynote that feels personal, relevant, and, most importantly, memorable.

Why Working with a Speakers Bureau Can Be Your Secret Weapon (Besides, They’re Fun to Work With)

If the idea of sorting through a gazillion potential speakers feels overwhelming, consider partnering with a speakers bureau. They’re like your personal matchmaking service.

A good bureau can help you find the perfect fit for your event, handle all the nitty-gritty details (contracts, logistics, etc.), and even provide backup options if your first choice isn’t available. Plus, they’ve got up-to-date information on the best speakers out there, so you know you’re getting someone who’s the real deal. Let me know if you’d like recommendations for excellent bureaus (or is it ‘bureaux’ in the plural? If you’re French, please let me know!)

What’s Hot in Sales and Motivational Speaking for 2025?

As we gear up for 2025, there are a few game-changing trends that everyone in sales needs to keep on their radar. These aren’t just buzzwords—these trends are rapidly transforming the way we approach sales.

1. Artificial Intelligence and Automation

AI is becoming an essential tool foracross the board. From predictive analytics that help you understand customer behaviour to chatbots that handle initial customer interactions, AI is revolutionising the sales process. Speakers who can break down AI’s practical applications in sales—without making you feel like you need a computer science degree—are going to be in high demand. Your team needs to understand how to leverage AI to work smarter, not harder.

2. Hyper-Personalization

Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all sales pitches. In 2025, it’s all about hyper-personalisation—using data to create customised experiences for every single customer. This means everything from tailored content marketing strategies to personalised product recommendations. Master hyper-personalisation will not only stand out from the competition but also build deeper relationships with their customers. An expert who can teach your team how to effectively connect and communicate will be worth their weight in gold.

3. Remote and Hybrid Sales Strategies

The shift to remote work isn’t just a temporary blip—it’s here to stay. And as we move into 2025, You need to be adept at closing deals both in-person and virtually. Hybrid sales strategies, which combine the best of both worlds, will be crucial. This means understanding how to build rapport over Zoom and Teams just as effectively as you would in a face-to-face meeting. An experienced expert who can help teams to be ‘Outstanding Online’ will be especially valuable.

How to Know If Your Speaker Has Been a Success

After the event, you’ll want to know if the person you booked delivered the goods. The formal way is by getting feedback from your audience. Did they find the speaker engaging? Did they walk away with new ideas or strategies? Were they, you know, actually motivated?

I also love the informal ‘What’s everyone talking about over drinks?’ test. If your speaker has made an impact, and delivered the goods then lots of people will be talking about their keynote and – importantly – thanking you for finding them.

Lastly, think about the long-term impact. Are the strategies and insights from the keynote still being discussed or implemented weeks or even months later? If so, congratulations—you’ve found yourself a winner.

The Bottom Line: Key Points to Remember

If you’ve only got 30 seconds’ reading time, here are the most important things to keep in mind:

• Impact Matters: Your speaker sets the tone for the entire event, so choose someone who can inspire, motivate, and engage in the style that you need.

• Experience Is Key: Look for someone with a proven track record in sales and public speaking—ideally someone who’s worked with companies like yours.

• Do Your Homework: Research potential speakers, read reviews, and make sure they’ve got the credentials and experience to back up their claims.

• Ask the Right Questions: Before booking, ask about their experience, availability, and how they tailor their content to fit your audience.

• Motivation Is a Must: Your speaker needs to bring the energy and inspiration your sales teams need to tackle challenges head-on. Choose someone who can not only motivate but also provide practical insights that your team can implement right away.

What does AI have to say about all this?

Having mentioned Artificial Intelligence, just for ‘fun’ I gave ChatGPT this blog post, and asked it to create some Frequently Asked Questions for me, based on the fact that my website is designed to promote me :-) – how do you think it did?
